The Falerno wine

There are territories capable of defying time, where the land keeps secrets thousands of years old. The Ager Falernus, spread across the slopes of Monte Massico and Monte Cicoli (Sinuessa) and touched by the breezes of Mondragone, is one of them...

It is said that Bacchus, god of wine, wandered in human form over the hills of the Massico. There he met an old and generous farmer named Falerno who, without knowing who he was, offered the traveller everything he had. Moved by such hospitality, Bacchus turned the milk into a divine nectar and covered the entire mountain with flourishing vines.

A marvellous drink had been born: Falerno wine.

The farmer welcomes the traveller; the milk becomes wine; the hills are covered with vines.

Beyond the myth, in Roman times Falerno was the status symbol par excellence, celebrated by poets and orators such as Horace, Pliny the Elder, Catullus, Virgil and other well-known figures of the age. It was famous for its exceptional longevity, able to mature in amphorae for decades.

In fact Falerno was a Grand Cru product, as one would say today, and already more than two thousand years ago it possessed, in itself, the natural characteristics of excellence and fragrance that distinguish it so remarkably.

Today this Grand Cru product — that is, the absolute pinnacle of quality drawn from the characteristics of the soil and from a perfect microclimate, together with the skilful and meticulous work of our estate — is an excellence unique of its kind.

Indeed, choosing Falerno today means drinking the very first and oldest Grand Cru in the world.

The Falerno of Cantine Sciacca: keepers of a timeless myth

At Cantine Sciacca we do not simply make wine: we are the artisanal keepers of a liquid legend. Our company philosophy starts from the ancient nobility of this long-standing product and, through contemporary work informed by the modernity of the present, aims to improve it constantly. The result is the highest qualitative expression that today’s society and technique can offer: a perfect bridge between the archaeology of wine and the excellence of the present.

To do this, we focus rigorously on the purity and strength of just two extraordinary grape varieties: Primitivo (for the reds) and the native Falanghina (for the whites).

Our collection: where identity meets the territory

We have created a selection of 9 labels in all, able to tell every single nuance of our land: four DOC and five IGT.

The 4 expressions of Falerno del Massico DOC

Our four wines with Denominazione di Origine Controllata represent the direct heir of the wine favoured by the nobility of the Roman Empire, and by the emperors in particular, for its finesse and fragrance. This is where our most prestigious selections come to life:

Caucinum & Faustianum. Our two great Falerno del Massico Rosso DOC, proud and imposing expressions of Primitivo grapes, a faithful mirror of the volcanic character of the territory.

Massicum. A label that holds, in its name and in the glass, all the history and complexity of the vineyards that look towards Monte Massico.

Petrinum. The white expression of our territory, a native Falanghina vinified on its own, born on the slopes of Monte Petrinum, uniting freshness and deep minerality.

The 5 Campania IGT selections

Five labels created to explore the freshness and richness of our territory in a contemporary key. Our Indicazione Geografica Tipica wines express exceptional drinkability and a fruity, harmonious character, suited both to everyday convivial moments and to the most versatile food pairings.

Our pride: the masterpiece aged from the 2019 vintage

Time is the best ally of a great wine. Within our walls we keep a rare and most precious pearl: an exclusive selection of red Falerno from Primitivo grapes, aged from the 2019 vintage, together with other great historic vintages.

Just as with the legendary Caucinum and Faustianum, which Roman patricians had matured for a very long time before opening them, this limited release represents the peak of our dedication and of our modern innovation. Years of patient evolution have smoothed the tannins, yielding a wine of deep ruby colour, with complex notes of red fruit in jam, sweet spices, tobacco and liquorice.

A bottle for contemplation, perfect for ennobling our cellar or for opening to celebrate an unforgettable moment.

From our vineyard to your table

Choosing a bottle signed by Cantine Sciacca means tasting a product of ancient Campania Felix that lives again today through the work of an estate that for more than a century has respected the land, raising its value with its gaze turned to the future.

By exploring our selection you bring into your glass the ancient nobility of the Ager Falernus, dressed in the innovative modernity of today that we have given it.
